Jay Lane

Jay Lane was born on December 4, 1964. During the 1980's, he joined a band called Ice Age and performed alongside childhood friend and guitarist Dave Shul. He then joined a local band called The Uptones, in which he played for two years before he joined another local band in 1985, called The Freaky Executives. The Uptones have been credited with being the first band devoted to playing ska on the West Coast of the United States.

Four years later, during a band rehearsal, Lane met Les Claypool, who invited him to join his group, Primus. They played together for over six months and Lane contributed to their cassette, "Sausage."

Not too long after, Lane co-founded the hip hop and jazz group, Alphabet Soup, along with saxophonist Kenny Brooks, keyboardist Dred Scott, and rappers Chris Burger and Zachariah Mose. Alphabet Soup released two albums, "Layin Low in the Cut", and "Strivin'", in 1994 and 1996, respectively.

Lane also formed the Charlie Hunter Trio with string guitarist Charlie Hunter and saxophonist Dave Ellis. The trio recorded two albums. Lane then started playing with Grateful Dead guitarist and vocalist Bob Weir, and bassist Rob Wasserman, to eventually form the group Bob Weir and RatDog. During this time, Les Claypool reunited with Lane and Primus' original guitarist, Todd Huth, to form a band called Sausage. They released an album called "Riddles", and shot a video of the title track that was played on Beavis and Butthead.

When Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, RatDog began touring. Playing with Bob Weir gave Lane the opportunity to meet and play with many noteworthy musicians, such as pianist Johnni Johnson.

In 2002, Lane won the "Drummer of the Year" title at the California Music Awards.

In 2005, he toured with both Les Claypool and Bob Weir and often played shows with Alphabet Soup between tours.

In 2006, Alphabet Soup members Zach Mose and Chris Burger formed a new group with rappers Mike Blake and Kingpin Rowski called The Band of Brotherz. Lane began performing with them right away. With a few new recruits, including Kenny Brooks, Dave Shul, DJ Teeko, Andre Marshall, Jeff Chimenti, and legendary bassist Troy Lampkins, the group performed a few shows. In the fall they released a debut album entitled Deadbeats and Murderous Melodys.

In fall of 2009, Lane became a member of Bob Weir and Phil Lesh's band, Further, and in summer of 2010, Lane rejoined Les Claypool in Primus.
